Course Details

Come explore the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge via canoeing and camping. This trip will take you through the beautiful Swan Lake system, also known as the Yaghanen by the Dena’ina; meaning “the good land”. During this trip, participants will develop their canoeing skills, learn about the land in which they are traveling on, and travel through several lakes that make up the Swan Lake system. Participants will also participate in a service-based project to learn about what it takes to maintain such a pristine area.

Ages 15-18. Please see “Course Overview” for additional information. No experience required.

Participants should be in good physical condition and prepared for all weather conditions.

Activities will rotate through labor-based projects, relaxation time, and strenuous-level exercise. Participants need to be able to paddle a canoe up to 6-10 miles a day, and sit in a canoe for 1.5 hours at a time, up to 6-8hrs a day. Participants should be prepared to lift and carry a 60lb canoe or 45lbs of gear up to ¾ of a mile, with breaks included, for up to 6 times within a day while walking on uneven terrain such as rocky and sandy soil, wet swamp, and within areas that may have significant brush and trees. Participants must be able to self-regulate emotions in various weather conditions such as wind, rain, hot, and cold with mosquitoes present. Participants should be able to communicate with a trip instructor if they need help or assistance at any time. Participants should be comfortable traveling in small, non-motorized boats, and preferably not prone to severe motion sickness. Participants must be under 250lbs due to the weight capacity of our canoes. No experience with trail work, hiking, canoeing, or camping is necessary to participate.

The group will be constantly supervised and guided, but each individual is responsible for attending the trip physically and mentally prepared for variable conditions.

Like any outdoor activity, there are inherent risks associated with our teen expeditions yet we actively manage our exposures and depend on you to play a role in our risk management. Read more here.

Due to a high volume of applicants and our time sensitive logistics for each trip, we request that students inform us no later than 10 days before the beginning of a trip if they will not be able to attend the expedition. Failure to do so can jeopardize eligibility for future trip opportunities.
