Katmai Floating Teachers Workshop
Course Information
Join us in experiencing the wilderness and wildlife of Katmai National Park and Preserve! Engage with scientists and park rangers in the field and develop creative new lesson plans for your classroom. This course will begin with two workshop days in Kodiak, followed by six nights on a 97-foot live-aboard boat adventuring along the Katmai coast.
Please note: We are not accepting applications for this course in 2026. Due to federal funding freezes, this course was canceled in 2025. As a result, participants accepted into the 2025 program will receive priority enrollment, followed by those who were waitlisted, to fill any remaining spots. Individuals will be notified if they are moved off the waitlist and accepted as space becomes available. We hope to continue offering this course to educators in the future and look forward to your application in 2027.

Course Details
Work collaboratively to think of culturally relevant ways to bring ocean issues and scientific research into your classroom. Learn about geology and wildlife biology while observing bears in the park! Discussion topics will include culturally responsive teaching, place-based learning, and inspiring student engagement with science through hands-on learning. This course is presented with the National Park Service’s Ocean Alaska Science and Learning Center (OASLC) and is led by National Park Education Coordinator Fiona North.

Physical Requirements
This workshop takes place in remote wilderness, on open ocean, and includes flying in small planes. Participants must be in good fitness and health and equipped for sudden changes in weather or long periods of inclement weather. Participants must be able to walk short distances over uneven, slippery coastal terrain carrying up to 25 pounds of personal and group gear, and longer distances with a day pack. Participants should feel at ease being near brown bears and comfortable with boat and small plane travel – preferably not prone to severe motion sickness. Like any outdoor activity, there are inherent risks associated with our field courses yet we actively manage our exposures and depend on you to play a role in our risk management.

Professional Development Credit
Three professional development credits are available for this course through the office of Professional and Continuing Education (PACE) at the University of Alaska Anchorage for an additional fee of $119. Information on the credit requirements, the course syllabus, and registration instructions will be available in May.
Cancellation Policy
Cancellations and/or substitutions that occur 60 days in advance of the course start date will be refunded the course fee, less a processing fee of $50 per space. For cancellations and/or substitutions 59 to eight days before the course start date, the entire fee will be retained unless we can fill your space. There will be no refunds within seven days of the course start date. Registration fees are not transferable to future years. If we have to cancel a course, your entire fee will be refunded. Refunds will be credited to the credit card used during the original transaction if less than 60 days since the original transaction. All other refunds will be made through a mailed check. All membership purchases are non-refundable and non-transferable.
