During the summer of 2024, I went on an Ak Geo alumni only backpacking trip. There were only 7 kids on that trip and it only lasted a week but during that time, a strong connection was made between us. When you are in the wilderness with the same small group of people for a week, you start to form a good connection. What stood out to me was the way we all started off as strangers who were very awkward around each other to a group of friends, (spending a week cuddled up with 2 other guys in a tent will do that to you) and that’s what I love about the expeditions: the way it brings people together who would usually never hang out.
During the trip, I also learned a lot about myself. Before becoming involved in Alaska Geographic, I never imagined myself as someone who would go on weeklong backpacking trips but now I know that is the type of person I am. That’s what I love about Alaska Geographic. It sent me out of my comfort zone and helped me discover new things that I could never imagine myself doing, like using leaves as toilet paper (it actually worked pretty well).
My expeditions have inspired me to keep exploring by showing me and others the true beauty of Alaska. People I know have often said that Alaska is the most boring place in the country and all they want to do is leave. I used to think this way until I realized that we live in one of the most naturally beautiful places in the world. All you have to do is step outside and you will see how lucky we are to live in a place like this.
